A racist voting system

This week, many campaigns were ran by politicians, celebrities and community organizers to get people to vote, and while people showed up to the polls in record numbers, a racist voting system still remains intact.

In Georgia, Stacey Abrams faced off against Republican Brian Kemp to become the state’s first Black woman governor. However, she was already fighting an unfair battle because, during the campaign, Kemp still held his position as Georgia’s secretary of State, who oversees elections and voter rolls.

According to The Hill, Abrams camp repeatedly called on Kemp to step down from his position, but he would not budge. It wasn’t until after Election Day, when Kemp was allegedly leading Abrams in the polls, that he resigned from his position of Secretary of State.

“It’s unfortunate that Brian Kemp did not step down months ago as Secretary of State to ensure that Georgia had a fair election,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said. “Whether it’s malicious intent or benign neglect, Kemp’s actions during the election were textbook voter suppression and surely decreased voter confidence among residents in the state. His actions were strategic, careless and aimed at silencing the voting power of communities of color in the state, and although his resignation comes at an interesting time, amidst a recount of the gubernatorial race, the NAACP will be closely watching how these events unfold.”

Kemp has already declared victory in the gubernatorial race, but Abrams has yet to concede and national outlets haven’t called the election yet.

On top of all this, some voters in the state also received racist robocalls branding Abrams “a poor man’s Aunt Jemima” before Election Day. Even Oprah, who was helping Abrams with her campaign, got some of the racist namecalling when the robocall named her a “Magical Negro.”

All apart of a racist voting system that’s as old as slavery.
