New York state Sen. Jesse Hamilton has proposed a bill that would make calling the police on a law-abiding minority a potential hate crime. Examples of what could be considered a hate crime: the Starbucks situation in Philadelphia when an employee called the police on two black men for not ordering anything. Another example, the Trump supporter who called the police on Sen. Jesse Hamilton for handing out anti-Trump materials in his district.

Example of what would NOT be considered a hate crime: the man who had a pipe that looked like a gun, that he was using as a weapon. He was later shot and killed by police. Under the proposed bill it would be considered justified since he posed a threat.

Do you think the proposed bill leaves too much of a “grey area” as to what is a hate crime and what’s not? Do you think the proposed bill would cut down on the instances of police being unnecessarily called?
