Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green is one of the few Black women physicists in America, and her efforts to introduce a groundbreaking treatment for cancer has brought her recognition and accolades.
Green, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, was orphaned young and raised by an aunt and uncle. An excellent student, Green was offered a full scholarship to attend Alabama A&M, which gave her a strong foundation in the sciences.
Armed with a degree in physics and optics, Green earned another full scholarship to the University of Alabama Birmingham, earning her master’s and Ph. D in physics. She was just the second Black woman to earn a Ph.D in physics from UAB.
While in school, Green’s aunt and uncle both died from cancer, motivating Green to develop new treatment methods aside from the physically harsh chemotherapy treatments that she saw her family members undergo.
Green’s application of lasers and nanoparticles remains one of the more innovative cancer treatments in modern medicine, as it singles out cancerous cells instead of attacking healthy ones as well.
The thirty-something Green recently won a $1.5 million grant to fund her cancer treatment technology that is still under patent-pending.
