Fences tells the story of an African American father (Denzel Washington) struggling with race relations in the United State while trying to raise his family (Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo) in the 1950s.

Jovan talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about how he landed the critically acclaimed role and what it was like working with Washington and Davis.

What advice did Denzel and Viola give him on set?

“Just to feel comfortable with my own preparation and what I did. He said don’t be afraid to take risks.”

What’s next?

“It’s one of those jobs you pray for. These are the ultimate examples of talent in our business. They said just focus on finding complex characters to play.”

Fences is in theaters nationwide Christmas Day.
