Childhood obesity is one of our nation’s biggest headaches. Unfortunately, Virginia’s youth population also struggle with this issue. According to the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, 1 out of every 5 children from ages 10 to 17 in our state are overweight. Figure’s also show when compared to white and non-Hispanic youth, minority children were more likely to be overweight.  These startling statistics suggest more needs to be done towards the development of youth diets and the importance of physical activity.

Earlier this week Richmond officials held their “Weight of the State” conference, which discussed solutions to this worldly epidemic. Those who attended the event received improved methods for teaching better nutrition in schools, interesting ways to promote exercise, and an overall respect for a healthier living.
