We’ve all been wondering who would pay – especially the people of Flint, Michigan – for that city’s disastrous water crisis.
Now is the reckoning time and the people of Flint are one step closer to getting answers; answers to the question – who’s to blame for poising the water?
Three government employees now face criminal charges, and Michigan Attorney General Bill Shootee says that’s not the end of the story.
Bill Shootee – “These charges are only the beginning. And there will be more to come, that I can guarantee you.”
Those who face charges are Mike Glasgow, a former laboratory and water quality supervisor who now serves as the city’s utilities administrator, Stephen Bush, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality district water supervisor and Mike Prysby, district water engineer.
They each face different charges, among them, tampering with evidence, willful neglect of duty, misconduct in office and conspiracy.
They could be fined tens of thousands of dollars and spend up to five years in prison.
This all started two years ago when the state switched Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River, and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality failed to threat the corrosive river water.
Now, more than 50 lawsuits have been filed, one alleging that people of Flint are suffering from skin lesions, hair loss, memory loss and depression.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder actually blamed the government.
Governor Rick Snyder – “A handful of bureaucrats have created a terrible situation in Flint from the beginning. If these accusations are correct, this would take it to a whole new level, and one of the things we clearly want to pursue is the truth. The citizens of Michigan deserve it. The citizens of Flint deserve it.”
I would go on to say the people of America deserve it too, so that they can prevent it from happening in their city or town.
Governor Snyder is vowing to pursue the truth.
Well here’s an inconvenient truth: The city of Flint is 56.6 percent African American.
Forty-one percent of the residents live below the poverty line.
According to a study by Virginia Tech, water from the Flint River was 19 times more corrosive than water from Detroit.
The long term consequences are yet to be known and could span generations.
How does a court of law even begin to mete out justice when from 10, 20, 30, 50 years into the future?
