The CDC has been adamant that the Zika virus may pose a great threat in Brazil and warned travelers to stay away from infected countries. There have been a few cases of Zika in the U.S. resulting from travel abroad and being bitten by mosquitoes carrying the deadly virus.
Now we have learned that the U.S. has reported the first case of the Zika virus being sexually transmitted in Texas. A patient in Dallas County contracted the Zika virus after having unprotected sex with a person that had the virus after being in a country where the virus was present.
Zachary Thompson, Director of the Dallas County Health department, states:
“Now that we know Zika virus can be transmitted through sex, this increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others. Next to abstinence, condoms are the best prevention method against any sexually transmitted infections.”
