Marvel is bringing back one of its old comics with a new twist and introducing a little more Black Girl Magic into its universe!

The comic stand had pretty much been an old boys club for years until writers started incorporating more women into their stories. Even at that, those women were most likely White. You would be hard pressed to think of any Non-White hero (or mutant) in the Marvel pantheon–and it would be even tougher to think of Marvel’s Black female heroes other than Storm.

Now Marvel has announced plans to release a new comic titled Moon-Girl and Devil Dinosaur! The story follows a girl named Lunella Lafayette and her super-intelligent T-rex.

Moon-Girl and Devil Dinosaur is sort of a throwback n that Marvel is dusting off the original Devil Dinosaur comic, penned by Jack Kirby in 1978. It didn’t last very long, but writers Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare are hoping that their spin on the old story will have a better run.

Where the original was set on another version of Earth where dinosaurs roamed and ruled (and Devil Dinosaur had a caveman as a sidekick), Moon-Girl and Devil Dinosaur will take place in New York and focus on Lunella facing typical childhood problems like wanting to fit in–even though she’s pretty special and has a T-rex for a pet.

“Brandon and I were talking about co-writing books with Marvel,” Reeder told Entertainment Weekly. “We were really interested in doing something that would be a lot of fun, and that gravitated towards something that wasn’t made yet or wasn’t a main character or popular character for awhile. I like that idea because you get to do a lot with those types of situations. You get to put a lot of creativity into it, and have your voice heard. You’re not quite tied in to all the events. So that’s something that attracted us.”

The team behind Moon-Girl and Devil Dinosaur were also hoping to keep the tone fairly family friendly so that kids can read the series.

“[Editor Mark Paniccia] and I were talking about how whenever people come in with young kids, or even just for Mark’s own kids, we don’t have that many publications that we can give to people that have that broad reach,” Assistant Editor Emily Shaw told EW. “Generally, we’re skewing a little bit older with a lot of our titles and we wanted to create something that adults and kids could really love, like a Pixar feel. That’s where the tone jumped off for us.”

Moon-Girl and Devil Dinosaur won’t be out until November, but I’m already in love with the character design! This little girl is rocking an afro-puff and glasses! Scroll down for more sketches of Lunella and her pet dino.

This is Marvel’s latest effort to focus on diversity in its comics, but I do want to point your attention towards the latest incarnation of The Infinity Gauntlet series. It follows a Black family on their quest to track down the Infinity Stones. It’s awesome and you need to read it.
