Those who found Jay Z‘s sudden infatuation with art during his Magna Carta Holy Grail days odd had their suspicions somewhat validated thanks to Marina Abramović‘s recent interview with Spike Magazine. As you may remember, Abramovic is a known performing artist who appeared in Jay Z’s “Picasso Baby” video/art piece/whatever you want to call it. In fact, Abramovic’s The Artist Is Present was the inspiration for the whole event.
According to her, Abramović agreed to do the video on the condition that Jay Z would aid her Marina Abramović Institute. Apparently, Jay Z has reneged on that agreement, leaving Abramović to feel “totally used.”
“The day before, he came to my office and I gave him an entire power point presentation and said: okay, you can help me, because I really need help to build this thing,” Abramović said. “Then he just completely used me. And that wasn’t fair.”
Abramović also said that her and her participants, “came out with nothing,” and will err away from such a project in the future.
“Never. I was really naive in this kind of world. It was really new to me, and I had no idea that this would happen,” Abramović said. “It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.”
The claims came from what was a good few days for Jay Z (and TIDAL subscribers). Jay Z performed the much-praised B-Sides concert at New York’s Terminal 5 and had Beyonce and Nicki Minaj drop their “Feeling Myself” video exclusively on TIDAL. He reportedly also wired thousands of dollars in bail money for the Baltimore protesters.
