People poured into the streets of Baltimore today in an attempt to hold city police accountable for allegedly killing Freddie Gray.
The young man died earlier this month after suffering a severe spinal injury while he was in police custody. The Daily Mail reports that demonstrators gathered at the site of Gray’s April 12 arrest on Tuesdayand began marching to the police station while carrying “Black Lives Matter” signs while holding their hands in the air to signify “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.”
While these things have come to summarize the movement against rampant police brutality, there was another level to the unrest as some protestors also carried signs reading “No Justice, No Peace.” These proved not simply be idle words as demonstrators began jumping over the barriers the police set up as a form of crowd control. At least one of the people who refused to be reigned in were taken into custody.
The circumstances surrounding Gray’s injury are unclear as six officers were involved in the arrest. They have been identified as Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White, and officers Ceasar Goodson, William Porter, Edward Nero and Garret Miller.

They apprehended Gray when he allegedly ran from them on-sight. Once he was captured he was put in a police van and cops began transporting him to the police station. However, they stopped a few minutes into the half-hour ride to shackle him. During the trip he asked for an inhaler and medical attention and police did take him to the hospital. Unfortunately, it is still unclear how Gray would have gotten the fatal spine injury.
His family still questions why he was ever arrested in the first place because it doesn’t appear that he did anything suspicious aside from trying to escape the police when he saw them. “They’ve made concessions on lack of probable cause,” Gray’s family attorney stated. “Running while black is not probable cause. Felony running doesn’t exist, and you can’t arrest someone for looking you in the eye.”
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights division is investigating the arrest to find out how this could have hapened and to determine whether Gray’s rights were violated. In the meantime, all six officers named in his arrest have been suspended without pay.
