Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 33 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation to focus on the crisis of missing African Americans.

To be a part of the solution, NewsOne will profile a missing person weekly and provide tips about how to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if someone goes missing.

Circumstances of Disappearance: Days after he went missing Kendall’s 1994 Lexus was found abandoned near the James B. Garrison Bridge on N.C. Highway 24-27.

The vehicle was parked and locked about 300 yards away from the Pee Dee River. There was no sign of Kendall, a high school senior.

Cadaver dogs and SCUBA equipment have been used to search the area but no new clues were unearthed.

Capt. Brian Hatley of the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office told NewsOne in an interview that extensive searches have been conducted for Kendall. Eighteen agencies in North Carolina and South Carolina have been involved with searching the area near where Kendall’s car was discovered.

“We have done a 500 meter perimeter search after the car was found and there have been land and water searches done right after the report was made. We had three more days of searches this last week,” said Hatley. “So far there are no signs of foul play.”

Kendall’s grandmother told WSOCTV.com that her grandson may have suffered from autism.

“It’s really been rough,” Undrey Bost told the station. “This is a child; even if he is 18, he is still a kid.”

Hatley said he was unaware of an autism diagnosis for Kendall but that he may have suffered from some mild learning disabilities.

Bost believes that her grandson may have been going to see his girlfriend.

“We don’t know what’s going on,” said Bost.

Hatley says that Kendall spoke with his girlfriend after he left the house but before he went missing.

“The last time she spoke with him was 2:45 a.m. that Sunday morning. She was aware that he was going to the lake,” said Hatley.

But that is where the clues end.

“There has not been any new information. There have been very few calls that have come directly into our office and there has been no communication from the missing person to anybody as far as friends and family or social media,” said Hatley.

But the agency is not giving up.

“Right now we are planning and coordinating additional searches, specifically of that body of water where the car was found,” said Hatley.

Last Seen Wearing: Unknown.

Identifying Marks or Characteristics: Unknown. Kendall sometimes stays with his mother who lives in Norwood, N.C.
