News anchor Pam McKelvy (pictured) of Tennessee-based WMC-TV has been sharing her journey battling breast cancer since 2012, bravely appearing on air after her chemotherapy with all of her hair gone at one point. After donning a wig for much of the last year, McKelvy removed her wig on air and showcased her natural hair.

Since March of 2013, McKelvy has worn the wig as she continued to recover from a double mastectomy which has eliminated her cancer. In a moving testimony about her own time in front of the camera and how important her hair was in the TV journalism business, McKelvy’s addressed the issue with a confidence that is nothing short of inspiring.

“A woman’s relationship with her hair is sacred,” McKelvy said. “Her hair is her crown of glory. And for women in TV, it’s intensified. I lost my hair after chemo and I’ve been wearing a wig since this past March.”

She added, “Today I’m taking it off for good. This is a milestone, blessed experience for me” before launching into a full report of women and hair with all the professionalism expected of a news anchor.

Flanked by her on-air co-workers, McKelvy’s new hairdo was indeed as beautiful as she is courageous in sharing such a vulnerable moment. Her closing words as she dabbed tears from her eyes punctuated the moment.

“I want everybody to know that no matter what you go through, it’s not about what’s on the outside, it’s about what’s on the inside. And I feel that on the inside I am more radiant and beautiful than I’ve ever been,” she said.

And we have to agree.
