A Petersburg police officer pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated Tuesday, but will only spend five days in jail for the crime.

John I. Dixon IV, 31, was originally sentenced to six months behind bars, but five months and 25 days will be suspended.

The officer, who is the son of the police chief in Petersburg, was pulled over in Henrico County for drunk driving in January. Dixon had failed all standard field sobriety tests and refused a breath test when he was pulled over.

The officer’s license is suspended for one year, and he now faces a $531 fine. Although Dixon pleaded guilty, he appealed the decision from Henrico District Court to Henrico Circuit Court.
