Transportation for America

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Transit workers are rallying in the nation’s capital to call for more support of mass transportation.

The rally will be held at Upper Senate Park in northwest Washington on Tuesday afternoon.

Organizers say the Rev. Jesse Jackson will join transit union leaders, Metro employees and other transit workers pushing for more money for transit systems that are struggling financially. They say funding cuts are putting jobs and infrastructure at risk.

In March, a report from the American Public Transportation Association showed that 59 percent of public transit systems have cut service or raised fares since Jan. 1, 2009, and many others are considering similar action.
