The wait is over. In a press conference this afternoon, President Obama tapped Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to be secretary for the Department of Transportation. The announcement ended weeks of speculation about whether Foxx would be picked for the job. Foxx previously announced he would not seek a third term as mayor.

Foxx is the first black cabinet nominee in Obama’s second term.

“Since Anthony took office, they’ve broken ground on a new streetcar project that’s going to bring modern electric tram service to the downtown area,” Obama said according to a Charlotte Business Journal article. “They’ve expanded an international airport. And they’re extending the city’s light-rail system. All of that has not only helped create new jobs, it’s helped Charlotte become more attractive to business.”

If confirmed by the Senate, Foxx will take over the Transportation Department from outgoing Secretary Ray LaHood, a Republican. Foxx, a Democrat, said he would approach the new position with a non-partisan perspective.

“There is no such thing as a Democratic or Republican road, bridge, port airfield or rail system” Foxx said during his acceptance remarks. “We must work together across party lines to enhance this nation’s infrastructure.”
