KISS – FM would like to salute all of the pioneers of Black Radio here in the Richmond & Tri – Cities area who led the way and opened doors for people like myself to continue the legacy of great radio broadcasting around the 804. For my Old School music lovers and radio fans, the names Kirby Carmichael, Boppin Ben Miles, ” Tiger ” Tom Mitchell, Chocolate Chip, Jim Minor, Jay Lang, & Ken Crandell ( just to name a few ) still stir up fond memories of the good old days of Black Radio in the Capital City.

If you’re a native of the 804, chances are you grew up listening to WANT, WENZ, or WKIE, all AM radio stations that represented the black community in a strong way, each with it’s own sound and style. It was those stations and the announcers that manned the airwaves that inspired people like myself at a younger age. By the time I came along and helped create Richmond’s first Black-oriented FM station, Magic 99, these guys were already legends in their own time.

In conjunction with the release of the documentary film “The Soul – R & B Radio Legends of Central Virginia, produced by local filmmaker and videographer Brad Johnston for El Bravador Filmworks, KISS – FM will salute the radio legends of the Richmond area by giving you the opportunity to win a copy of the film on DVD all this week on the KISS Quiet Storm. Many of those voices will join me this Friday on the show from 8 – 10 pm just to chat about their legacy, old school radio, and a chance to say thanks to their supporters of many years in and around the Richmond community.
