Week 6 in the NFL got underway with the Tennessee Titans knocking off the Pittsburgh Steelers 26 – 23 in Nashville on Thursday night. The loss gives the Steelers a 2 – 3 record and the only thing between Pittsburgh and the AFC North cellar are the 0 – 5 Cleveland Browns. The Steelers fall again without the services of their star defender Troy Palomalu. One game stands out to me this weekend, and perhaps that’s because it involves my team, the Dallas Cowboys, who have a date with the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday. With the Boyz’ offense sputtering, facing Ray Lewis & company is not a pleasant thought. In my view, Dallas cannot be considered a contender until we display the ability to play at least TWO solid games in a row. So far in 2012, that has not happened. The Chicago Bears manhandled the Cowboys like they were “real” bears.
Under the direction of Head Coach Jason Garrett, the Boyz have digressed. The talent is there and has been simce Bill Parcells departed, but with Garrett hyped as an offensive wizard when lured to Big D by Jerry Jones, we the fans continue waiting for the offensive explosion. It is yet to happen, and quite frankly, I don’t think it will. Because JJ owns the team and calls the shots, Cowboy fans are just stuck with Garrett’s unexciting offense and can expect another .500 season, and that’s if we’re lucky!
Meanwhile, believe it or not, just three days after the crushing blow that knocked Washington’s prized rookie QB Robert Griffin III out of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, the rookie has been cleared to play this weekend against the Minnesota Vikings. RG – 3 was smashed by Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon in the third quarter of the 24 – 17 loss, and did not return after it was determined he had suffered a concussion. Expect the Redskins to RUN the football this weekend if Griffin starts. Will he be as effective, will his instincts chamge as a result of that vicious hit last Sunday? Hmmm…..
Other big games this week include the world champion New York Giants visiting the powerful San Francisco 49ers out west, Richmond’s Russell Wilson & the Seattle Seahawks host Tom Brady & the New England Patriots, and the Indianapolis game in New York against the Jets could be an interesting matchup with the way No. 1 pick Andrew Luck is playing, and the Jets defense? What defense? The action gets underway Thursday night with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans.
