One day after GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney chose to take the time during the aftermath of the murders of four Americans in Libya to attack President Obama, he has since softened his stance in the wake of the death of a US Ambassador and three others. Romney blamed the President and was critical of a statement released by concerned staff members of the US Embassy in Libya, who at the time the message was sent out, were more than likely in fear of their lives.
Not only were Romney’s comment distasteful and showing a lack of compassion for those who were at the time in harm’s way, but they lacked any full understanding of exactly what was going on in Libya. Most observers feel Romney simply saw what his campaign obviously thought was an opening to again bash the President, but his comments were seen as insensitive to the families of the slain officials, and looked almost “desperate” in it’s effort.
After doubling down on his comments Wednesday evening, even after discovering all the facts, Romney is now sounding more compassionate in his rhetoric regarding the Libyan incident. His original comments were viewed as reckless considering the fragile relationships between the US and the Muslim community. Since the incident in Libya and Romney’s offensive remarks, violence has broken out in Yeman and Egypt as well.
