The 2012 college football season is off and running in the CIAA and the MEAC conferences. In fact, the two collaborated on Labor Day weekend as the Trojans of Virginia State visited their arch-rivals, the Spartans of Norfolk State University, last season’s MEAC champions. NSU played like a championship team in defeating the Trojans 24 – 0 in the season opener for both teams. VSU returns to Petersburg and the cozy confines of Roger’s Stadium for their home opener this Saturday against West Liberty State at 1:30pm in the Trojans’ “Back To School” game.

Meanwhile, the Panthers of Virginia Union University will hit the road to play at Brevard College of North Carolina. VUU is coming off a 28 – 7 blowout of Benedict College last weekend in Richmond while the Tornadoes were beaten badly at Presbyterian College 45 – 10. In the MEAC this weekend, Norfolk State travels to Lynchburg on Saturday to take on Liberty University, while the Hampton University Pirates will host the Monarchs of Old Dominion in a second version of the Battle of the Bay. ODU is no lightweight after making the FCS playoffs last season, and Hampton is on probation and ineligible for the MEAC title or postseason play.
