R&B singer Chaka Khan has been granted temporary custody of her granddaughter.

Chaka applied for guardianship of the 10-year-old last week, claiming in her petition that the child’s mother is incapable of caring for the girl because of a “heavy involvement in drugs”.

Khan also revealed she has “assumed on a day-to-day basis the role of the child’s parent fulfilling both the child’s physical and psychological needs for care and affection”.

Chaka’s sister/manager, Tammy McCrary, filed an additional motion stating that Khan’s son “also uses and abuses drugs and other illegal substances”.

A hearing is set for October 2011 to make the custody permanent.
