The opening weekend of the 2011 College Football season was a very successful one for most of our local universities, only Virginia State came out of the first official weekend of the new season with a loss.  The Trojans were no match for the Spartans of Norfolk State in Saturday’s Labor Day Classic.  Meanwhile, Virginia Union continues to flex its muscle, pitching the Panthers second straight shut-out, a 27-0 victory over Benedict College in the Palmetto Kickoff Classic in Columbia, SC.  Union is undefeated and un-scored-upon.  In major college action, both Virginia Tech and UVA ran their opponents out of town, the Hokies, ranked 13th going into the weekend, clobbered Appalachian State, the Cavaliers did likewise to the Indians of William & Mary.  Hampton University defeated Alabama A & M in Chicago, but the holiday weekend’s biggest story was Richmond’s raod win at Duke University.  The Spiders overcame the resignation of their head coach and the adjustment to a new one, Wayne Lineburg, who got his kids prepared to win a huge game  over an ACC squad.
