Newport News, VA:  The Peninsula Health Department has issued a swimming advisory for Hilton and Huntington Park Beaches in Newport News.

The health department issued the advisory after samples collected Wednesday and Thursday showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the State Water Quality Standards.

Health officials will make the public fully aware when the bacteria levels decrease enough to meet standards.

Are there any health risk to this advisory? The health department tests for enterococci, a group of organisms used to determine the extent of fecal contamination of recreational waters. If swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the standard there is an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness.

According to the Peninsula Health District Director, David Trump, the advisories are usually temporary.
