The eggs children hunt for during the Easter season don’t usually chirp, much less beep. But this year the Richmond Police Bomb Squad wanted to make sure children who are visually impaired had the chance to enjoy an Easter egg hunt, too.
Instead of taking apart a device that beeps, this time the Bomb Squad used their technical talents to put together dozens of beeping Easter eggs.
“Usually we rotate duties for Bomb Squad callouts and wait to see whose number is up,” said Master Police Officer Mark Castillo. “For this project though, we didn’t have any problem getting volunteers. Bomb Squad members pitched in to construct 125 beeping eggs.”
The beeping eggs will make their debut at an egg hunt scheduled for 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at E. Claiborne Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond. Children will receive prizes for eggs they find during the hunt. There also will be egg decorating for children to create a souvenir egg from the event, along with crafts and face painting.
The Bomb Squad partnered with the Virginia Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments for the event. “We are expecting about 20 to 30 children from the association to participate, but we welcome area children who are visually impaired to also participate,” Castillo said.
The Beeping Easter Egg Hunt is open to visually impaired children age 5 and up, accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information or to register a child to participate in the hunt, please call Master Police Officer Mark Castillo at 646-0488 by 5 p.m. Friday, April 8.
