Tuesday, Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, asked for a publicly-funded lawyer to handle his appeal on a manslaughter conviction in the pop star’s death, saying he could not afford to pay for one himself.

Dr. Conrad Murray, serving a four-year jail term for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson in 2009, filed papers with Los Angeles Superior Court saying he was unable to fund his legal help any longer.

“The defendant is indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal,” the court papers said.

Murray said he wished to appeal both his conviction and his sentence but so far has not filed formal papers with the California appeals court.

The 58-year-old cardiologist had hired two lawyers for his six-week trial, but he was convicted in November of involuntary manslaughter, or gross negligence, after admitting he gave the pop music icon nightly doses of the surgical anesthetic propofol to help Jackson sleep.

Jackson, 50, died on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of propofol and sedatives, just weeks before a series of planned comeback concerts.

The doctor who was convicted in the overdose death of Michael Jackson was sentenced to the maximum four years in prison Tuesday in a finale to the tormented saga of the King of Pop.

Dr. Conrad Murray sat stoically with his hands crossed as Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor repeatedly chastised him for what he called a “horrific violation of trust” while caring for Jackson.

“Dr. Murray created a set of circumstances and became involved in a cycle of horrible medicine,” the judge said. “The practice of propofol for medicine madness, which violated his sworn obligation, for money, fame prestige and whwatever else may have occurred.”

Pastor said one of the most disturbing aspects of Murray’s case was a slurred recording of Jackson recovered from the doctor’s cell phone.

“That tape recording was Dr. Murray’s insurance policy,” the judge said. “It was designed to record his patient surreptitiously at that patient’s most vulnerable point.”

Michael Jackson’s family told the court they were not seeking revenge but want the doctor who killed Michael to receive a stiff sentence that serves as a warning to opportunistic doctors.

“The Bible reminds us that men cannot do justice, they can only seek justice,” the family said in a statement read by attorney Brian Panish. “That is all we can ask as a family, and that is all we ask for here.”

The statement went on to say, “We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back.”

Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a six-week trial that presented the most detailed account yet of Jackson’s final hours but left many questions about Murray’s treatment of the superstar with an operating-room anesthetic as he battled chronic insomnia.

Lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff highlighted the accomplishments of Murray.

“I do wonder though to what extent the court considers the entirety of a man’s book of life, as opposed to one chapter,” he told the judge.

The doctor decided not to directly address the court.

Chernoff again attacked Michael Jackson, as he and his team frequently did during the doctor’s trial.

“Michael Jackson was a drug seeker,” Chernoff said.

Murray declined to testify during his trial but did opt to participate in a documentary in which he said he didn’t consider himself guilty of any crime and blamed Jackson for entrapping him into administering the propofol doses. His attorneys contended throughout the case that Jackson must have given himself the fatal dose when Murray left the singer’s bedside.

In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors cited Murray’s statements to advocate that he receive the maximum term. They also want him to pay restitution to the singer’s three children — Prince, Paris and Blanket.

It’s unlikely that Murray can pay any sizable sum, including the $1.8 million cost of his funeral. He was deeply in debt when he agreed to serve as Jackson’s personal physician for $150,000 a month, and Michael died before Murray received any money.

Prosecutors said the relationship of Jackson and Murray was corrupted by greed. Murray left his practices to serve as Jackson’s doctor and look out for his well-being, but instead acted as an employee catering to Michael’s desire to receive propofol to put him to sleep, prosecutors said.

“The defendant has displayed a complete lack of remorse for causing Michael Jackson’s death,” prosecutors wrote in a filing last week. “Even worse than failing to accept even the slightest level of responsibility, (Murray) has placed blame on everyone else, including the one person no longer here to defend himself, Michael Jackson.”

Murray’s attorneys are relying largely on 34 letters from relatives, friends and former patients to portray Murray in a softer light and win a lighter sentence. The letters and defense filings describe Murray’s compassion as a doctor, including accepting lower payments from his mostly poor patients.

“There is no question that the death of his patient, Mr. Jackson, was unintentional and an enormous tragedy for everyone affected,” defense attorneys wrote in their sentencing memo. “Dr. Murray has been described as a changed, grief-stricken man, who walks around under a pall of sadness since the loss of his patient, Mr. Jackson.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says Dr. Conrad Murray has not been placed on suicide watch, contrary to an earlier report from the Los Angeles Times.

Murray is being held in a cell in the medical services building where there is a higher ratio of guards to inmates for his safety, according to Deputy Jeff Cannon.

It is an area where they sometimes keep suicidal inmates, but authorities say Murray is not on suicide watch, Cannon said.

Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the Michael Jackson. His attorneys say they plan to appeal the verdict.

A stone-faced Murray appeared to show no emotion as the verdict was read, but someone in the gallery let out a loud, but short scream.

Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison on the conviction when he is sentenced on November 29. The minimum possible sentence is probation. Murray could also lose his medical license.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor ordered Murray to be held without bail until that date, and Murray was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.

“This is not a crime involving a mistake of judgment … This was a crime where the end result was the death of a human being,” Pastor said in explaining his decision to remand Murray to police custody.

“That factor demonstrates rather dramatically that the public should be protected.”

Legal experts say that, based on the judge’s decision to remand Murray into custody, they expect he will impose the maximum sentence. Due to overcrowding, however, it’s likely that Murray would only serve half of a four-year sentence, or about two years.

Murray served as Jackson’s personal physician as Jackson prepared for his comeback concerts, with Murray giving him the surgical anesthetic propofol to help him sleep nearly every night for the last two months of his life, according to testimony.

Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, was caused by “acute propofol intoxication” in combination with two sedatives, the Los Angeles County coroner ruled.

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan reveals that he waited more than an hour Tuesday morning at the jail in an attempt to see Murray, but was told that the doctor was being held in the medical unit of the facility. After an excessive wait time, Flanagan left frustrated and without having seen his client.

A new documentary provides a new, never-before-seen perspective on Conrad Murray, the doctor who was recently convicted of negligent manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

The documentary, Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Relationship, which aired Friday night on MSNBC, included an interview in which Murray claims he was only trying to “tip” Michael Jackson into sleep when he gave him a “tiny bit” of Propofol the morning the pop icon died. As Murray never took the stand in his trial, the interview is a rare look into his version of events.

Murray says he eventually gave in to Jackson’s, who he says was an insomniac, pleads for “some milk,” meaning Propofol. Murray says at the time he thought, “If I give him just a tiny amount of Propofol, 25 milligrams, slowly infused, I may just tip him into sleep—and the other medications will now get a chance to work because he had a fair amount of medication on board.”

The documentary also gave a behind-the-scenes look at Murray reaction to the trial, including a moment when he blasted his attorney for flubbing a cross-examination with prosecution expert Dr. Alan Steinberg. “I take offense when my damn attorney is not prepared for that man.” Murray says of Michael Flanagan, who he later fired. “[He] gotta wake up. He needs a lot of coffee and some pit bull, or Red Bull, after lunch.”

Later in the documentary, Murray claims that Jackson “always had a chamber that was exclusively his: the bedroom that he slept in. I had to persuade him, eventually to have it cleaned. Because one, he peed the bed. It did not smell good. It was mildew, and I had to get it clean…Who would ever believe that a man his age would still be wetting his bed?” Murray claims it wasn’t medications that made Jackson wet his bed, alleging it was psychological.

The Jackson family had previously called on MSNBC to cancel the documentary special’s broadcast. “[It's] morally reprehensible to cloak a murderer and convicted felon with celebrity status,” LaToya Jackson wrote in a letter to network president Phil Griffin. “[It's] disgusting to permit this criminal to profit from homicidal acts that left my family without a brother, my niece and nephews without a father, my parents without a son.”

Conrad Murray may never have taken the stand in his involuntary manslaughter trial, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t want the opportunity to defend himself to his many critics.

With that in mind, Michael Jackson’s doctor sat down with the Today show, prior to the jury rendering a guilty verdict, and for the first time, spoke extensively about the details surrounding Jackson’s death, his use of propofol and what, if any, responsibility he accepts.

NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie questioned Murray in the interview, which will air in two parts this week, and began with the day Jackson died. She asked if he could really have been properly monitoring his patient given his recorded history of emails, texts and phone calls at the most critical juncture of time.

Was he distracted?

“No, I was not,” Murray said, before going on to defend his actions. “When I looked at a man who was all night deprived of sleep, who was desperate for sleep, and finally is getting some sleep, am I gonna sit over him, sit around him, tug on his feet, do anything unusual to wake him up? No.”

He acknowledged that he walked out of the room to make phone calls, and that he “could not see” Jackson or, more critically, hear if he stopped breathing, but said, “I would think if he got up and he called to me, I would hear him.

“But he was not on an infusion that would cause him to stop breathing, and that’s the reason they talk about I was not supposed to be monitoring him at that time, because there was no need for monitoring.”

Guthrie also questioned Murray on what seems to universally be considered an extreme deviation from the standard of care, his home administration of propofol.

“I looked at my condition with Michael not as I, not as about giving it, but trying to find a method to take away something from him, that I felt he should not have been using on his own.”

Though he stopped short of admitting wrongdoing, he did seem to acknowledge that he had doubts about his behavior.

“I should have walked away. But if also I walked away, I would have abandoned a friend.”

Guthrie went on to hammer Murray on whether or not he thought he bore any responsibility for Jackson’s death, which he has been careful not to concede.

When Guthrie told him to “own your portion” of his passing, he simply replied, “Mm-hmm.”

“Well, I’m gonna say, that was not a foreseeable situation,” he began, before Guthrie interrupted with an incredulous, “It wasn’t?”

“No. Had I known what I know today in retrospect, that Mr. Jackson was an addict, and he had shared that information with me, addicts may behave in a way that is unreasonable and you may consider it.”

He went on to acknowledge that Jackson was a desperate man: “desperate for sleep.”

“And you left him alone with propofol?” Guthrie asked.

“He was, he was asleep,” Murray replied.

The interview airs in its entirety over two days on Today, Thursday and Friday

After deliberating for less than two days, jurors have have found Michael Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray GUILTY of causing Jackson’s death in 2009 from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol.

During the trial, prosecutors painted Murray as an incompetent doctor who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed Michael Jackson.

The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture’s most shocking tragedies — the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer’s heavily promoted comeback concerts.

Murray sat stone-faced and showed little reaction at the verdict.

There was a shriek in the courtroom when the verdict was read, and the crowd erupted outside the courthouse. The judge polled the jury, and each juror answered “yes” when asked whether their verdict was guilty.

The jury deliberated less than nine hours. Murray, 58, faces a sentence of up to four years in prison. He could also lose his medical license.

The judge has given jurors the option to talk to the press about the trial if they choose. Each juror, however, has to wait 90 days before profitting from their story.

By attorney request, the judge also stated that Dr. Conrad Murray will be sentenced on November 29. He will be held in County custody without bail until then, as he is considered a public safety threat.

Jurors heard nearly a full day of closing arguments Thursday from attorneys from both sides.

An attorney for Murray told jurors Thursday that his client would never have been put on trial were it not for Jackson’s celebrity.

“Somebody’s got to say it: If it were anybody else but Michael Jackson, if it were anybody else, would this doctor be here today?” defense attorney Ed Chernoff told jurors.

The defense also accused prosecutors of playing on the emotions of jurors by repeatedly showing them a photo of Jackson’s children in an effort to paint Jackson as a victim.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009, and details of his final days dribbled out over several months.

Murray stands accused of administering the fatal dose of anesthetic Propofol which cost Michael his life on June 25, 2009. He has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Reportedly, Conrad Murray has taken up negotiations to cash in on his side of the story by selling the documentary to a major TV network once a verdict has been reached.

According to the New York Post, Murray has been filming interviews for the project throughout the trial and the documentary will come as a package deal, with the winning network also receiving the first post-trial interview with Dr. Murray.

A source says, “A news division that pays for the documentary will end up with a side deal of getting the sit-down with Conrad. It’s crafted in such a way for a news division that doesn’t pay for interviews… They have already filmed a long interview in case he’s taken into custody.”

A representative for CNN confirms such a project is in the works, but the network has “passed on it”.

The trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused in Michael Jackson’s death, finished closing arguments Thursday.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff argued that Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, shouldn’t be convicted of killing the King of Pop because the singer caused his own death by administering his own overdose of the anesthetic propofol. Chernoff questioned why no propofol was found in the IV bag by Jackson’s bed and proposed that Jackson’s fame was the reason Murray was on trial for involuntary manslaughter.

“Somebody’s got to say it: If it were anybody else but Michael Jackson, if it were anybody else, would this doctor be here today?” said Chernoff. “They want you to convict Dr. Murray for the actions of Michael Jackson. … It’s not a reality show.”

Prosecutor David Walgren didn’t address Jackson’s fame, but instead focused on the emotional impact of the death on his children.

“For them, this case doesn’t end today or tomorrow or the next day,” Walgren told jurors. “For Michael’s children this case will go on forever because they do not have a father.”

The prosecutor said that any scientific evidence that the defense presented was “junk science” and that Murray had broken trust with Jackson by changing their doctor-patient relationship to one of “employer-employee” and that in exchange for $150,000 a month would perpetuate an “obscene experiment” in which he provided Jackson drugs in an unsafe manner.

Walgren asked the jury to find that Murray acted with “extreme, criminal, gross negligence” when he gave Jackson propofol.

The jury begins deliberations Friday.

Dr. Conrad Murray announced in court Tuesday that he will not testify in his involuntary manslaughter trial.

Murray paused and looked at each of his lawyers for several seconds before telling the judge, “My decision is that I will not testify in this matter.”

His decision to remain silent brought to an end the defense case in the trial of Michael Jackson’s doctor, setting the stage for closing arguments on Thursday. Lawyers have been given Wednesday off from court to prepare their arguments.

A Michael Jackson fan was removed from the courthouse after yelling “Murderer, Murderer” at Murray as he walked down the hallway during a recess late Tuesday morning.

Jackson fans lined both sides of the hallway and held hands as members of Jackson’s family walked past at the end of the morning session.

Parents Joe and Katherine Jackson attended court Tuesday, along with their youngest son, Randy Jackson.

Prosecutors briefly recalled their anesthesiology expert, Dr. Steven Shafer, for a rebuttal to defense propofol expert Dr. Paul White before resting their case Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor met with lawyers for both sides Tuesday afternoon to discuss what exhibits will be admitted into evidence and what instructions he will give to jurors before they begin deliberations Thursday afternoon.

The prosecution contends that Murray’s use of the surgical anesthetic propofol to treat Jackson’s insomnia in his home deviated from the standards of care expected of a doctor so egregiously that it made him criminally responsible for Jackson’s death.

If Murray had decided to tell jurors his version of what happened the day the world’s biggest pop star died under his care, it would have been at the risk of intensive cross-examination by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren.

Walgren proved his cross-examination skills again Monday in a fiery battle with Dr. Paul White over the defense anesthesiology expert’s theory that Jackson died from drugs he gave himself.

White completed his testimony Tuesday morning.

White’s bruises in his battle with Walgren on Monday included a contempt-of-court citation and a $1,000 fine after he ignored repeated warnings from Pastor not to refer to his personal conversations with Murray.

Walgren insisted that White answer his questions based only on what he knew from Murray’s interview with police, not what Murray told him privately. It otherwise would have been a way for the defense to introduce statements from the defendant without him having to testify.

“Nice try,” Pastor told the defense as he ruled they couldn’t do that.

Walgren spent much of Monday trying to discredit what White said during his testimony Friday, and getting the defense expert to support the prosecution’s argument that Murray’s treatment of Jackson was reckless.

White conceded that Murray deviated from the standards of care, but he would not agree that they were so “egregious and extreme” that they make Murray criminally responsible for Jackson’s death. Murray’s deviations were “perhaps between minor and serious, but it’s not extreme,” he said.

Walgren also was successful in getting White to agree that he would not have done what Murray did — take the job of sedating Jackson nearly every night at home with propofol.

“No amount of money” could get him to take the job, White said. “Absolutely not,” he testified. “That would be a job I would never consider accepting.”

The prosecution contends greed led Murray to leave his medical practice and put his ethics aside to serve as Jackson’s private doctor for $150,000 a month.

But the biggest battle between Walgren and White was fought over the competing theories of how Jackson died and the scientific evidence that supports them.

The Los Angeles County coroner ruled that Jackson’s June 25, 2009, death was caused by “acute propofol intoxication” in combination with two sedatives.

White concluded that the level of drugs found in Jackson’s stomach, blood and urine, convinced him that Jackson died after he rapidly injected himself with propofol on top of a large dose of lorazepam he swallowed hours earlier.

Shafer, the prosecution’s propofol expert, concluded the “only scenario” that fits the scientific evidence is that Jackson was on a constant intravenous drip of propofol for three hours before his death.

Shafer also testified that Murray must have also injected Jackson with a series of large doses of lorazepam, a sedative, hours before his death.

White theorized that Jackson could have “pushed” the drug into an catheter in his leg using a syringe over a 15- to 30-second period, much faster than a doctor would have done. “I believe it could potentially have lethal consequences,” White testified.

Under cross-examination Monday, White said he believed Jackson used the same syringe Murray had loaded with propofol an hour earlier to give Jackson a 25-milligram injection. Murray filled it with 50 milligrams initially, leaving it half-filled in Jackson’s bedroom, under White’s theory.

White ruled out the possibility that Murray would have injected the fatal dose unless “he wanted to potentially harm Mr. Jackson.”

Walgren asked White whether he thought Jackson intended to harm himself.

“I don’t think he realized the potential danger,” White replied.

The defense contends Jackson was desperate for sleep, fearing his comeback concerts would be canceled if he missed another rehearsal from lack of rest.

Walgren pressed White for an opinion about Murray’s decision to leave Jackson alone with a syringe of propofol, considering he should have known Jackson had “pushed” a syringe of propofol before.

“No, I would not leave the room,” he said.

Prosecutors contend Murray is responsible for Jackson’s death, even if he did not give him the final and fatal dose, because he was reckless in using the surgical anesthetic to help Jackson sleep without proper precautions.

An expert defense witness suggested on Monday that Michael Jackson could have risen from his bed, picked up a syringe left by his doctor and given himself a fatal dose of a powerful anesthetic in 2009.

But the testimony by Dr. Paul White in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray was ridiculed by prosecutors in an aggressive cross-examination of the key witness for the defense.

As the trial, now in its sixth week, began drawing to a close, Murray told the judge he was still considering testifying in his own defense, despite previous assurances by his lawyers that they did not plan to call him.

“I have not made a decision,” Murray said. “… It depends on how the case progresses.”

In a damaging day for Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson, White was forced to acknowledge he would never agree to give propofol to a patient in a bedroom to treat insomnia, as Murray has admitted doing.

Propofol, normally used to sedate patients before surgery, was ruled the chief cause of Jackson’s death.

“It’s something that no amount of money would convince me to accept or take on as a responsibility,” White said.

Administering propofol for insomnia is an “off-label use” of the drug that “had not been studied,” White said.

White, an expert on propofol, said that after Murray gave Jackson a relatively small dose of 25 milligrams of the drug, he might have walked out of the room and left a syringe with another 25 milligrams of the agent that Jackson called his “milk.” Neither side in the case has said where a syringe might have been located.

Murray’s attorneys have argued during the trial that Jackson may have “self-administered” propofol, but they have until now provided few details.

But an incredulous prosecutor cited prior testimony about how Jackson was lying in bed on June 25, 2009, wearing a urine-collecting device called a “condom catheter” and having taken several sedatives.

“And so Michael Jackson is walking around, wheeling an IV stand, attached to a condom catheter and Conrad Murray is somewhere else on the phone?” prosecutor David Walgren asked White. “It’s a possible scenario,” White responded.

LEAVING JACKSON’S BEDSIDE

The singer might have self-injected through a port on an IV line that Murray had installed for him, White said.

Prosecution witnesses have presented a scenario under which Murray placed Jackson on an intravenous drip of propofol after the initial injection, as he had done in about two months of prior nightly propofol treatments.

Prosecution witnesses have testified Murray was not properly monitoring Jackson, in a bid to bolster the charge of involuntary manslaughter, or gross negligence, against him.

White himself admitted that he would have not left Jackson’s bedside since, as Walgren said, the singer had confessed he liked to “push the propofol” into himself.

White also told the court that he had been paid over $11,000 for his testimony by the defense team.

Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Defense attorneys said they will call a researcher on Tuesday who prepared mathematical models White used to analyze the case, and that she would be their final witness.

Prosecutors said they plan to call back their propofol expert, Dr. Steven Shafer, to rebut defense testimony before both sides make closing arguments and hand the case to the jury.
