“Sex and the City” Star Cynthia Nixon debuted a bald, shaved head Tuesday during an appearance on Live! With Kelly.
Nixon, who played Miranda Hobbs in the iconic “Sex and the City,” ditched her signature red hair and took on the extreme buzzcut for her upcoming starring stage role it Wit – the award-winning drama about a poetry professor who battles cancer.
Nixon herself battled breast cancer in 2006, and now serves as an ambassador or Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Pulitzer-prize winning play Wit, which debuted off-Broadway in 1998, was made into a 2001 HBO film adaptation, and its official Broadway premiere is this Thursday.
Nixon also revealed in her Live! interview that she chooses to be gay.
“For me, it is a choice,” Nixon explained in a New York Times magazine profile. “I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me.”
Nixon is engaged to long-time partner Christine Marinoni, who gave birth to their son Max last year. Prior to their relationship, Nixon was in a 15-year relationship with Danny Mozes, with whom she has two children.
Several members of the gay and lesbian community are speaking out against Nixon’s insinuation that homosexuals can choose to change their sexual orientation.
Gay blogger and activist John Aravosis stressed that Nixon should realize she’s bisexual, reports TV Guide. “She needs to learn how to choose her words better, because she just fell into a right-wing trap, willingly,” he wrote on AMERICAblog. “When the religious right says it’s a choice, they mean you quite literally choose your sexual orientation, you can change it at will, and that’s bull.”
Celebrity chef Cat Cora also spoke out publically against Nixon. “I’m gay, and I was born this way,” she told the panel of ladies on “The Talk.” “I really feel like it was dangerous and irresponsible of Cynthia, especially in this environment today when so many young people are taking their lives.”
