Tragedy struck this Virginia town during the holiday weekend as a 7-year-old boy steered a powerboat into a pier on the Hampton River, causing his mother to suffer serious injuries.  The 35-year-old mother later died at the hospital.  Investigators are still trying to determine why such a young child was steering the boat, and how the collision was violent enough to take the mother’s life.

Getting an inside look at a maximum security prison isn’t usually something people look forward to, but one brave inmate has given us all the chance to see what really happens behind the walls.

Omar Broadway, a prisoner at Northern State prison in Newark, N.J., managed to sneak a video camera into the prison and filmed for almost six months. Somehow, he managed to hide the camera and the tape without having it destroyed, and the result is an unprecedented look at prison through the eyes of a prisoner.

The documentary, which will premiere on HBO on July 14, was put together by Fourth Row Films, follows Broadway’s everyday life as a prisoner for six months, including his interaction with The Bloods, video of abusive guards and inmate-on-inmate violence.

Video cameras are strictly forbidden inside prisons such as Northern State, so Broadway’s film is the first and possibly the last of its kind.
