First Lady Michelle Obama announced as part of her Joining Forces initiative, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 4th Annual “Business Steps Up: Hiring Our Heros” that a range of businesses plan to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014.

Governor Bob McDonnell recently said he wants to make Virginia “the most friendliest veteran state in the nation”. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are taking steps to provide 25,000 jobs for veterans and spouses in Virginia.

The United State Department of Veteran Affairs wants to support homeless veterans and women veterans. Other services available include military service benefits, vocational rehabilitation/employment and the like. Please visit www.va.gov.

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services is available for veterans and families when it comes to federal benefits, finding jobs for veterans, updates on the GI bill, in-state tuition residency requirement waived for veterans at public colleges and universities, etc.

Somebody say it ain’t so. After the big announcement and weeks of congratulatory statements live on the air from fans, friends and supporters abroad, the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin has reportedly called off the wedding we all were waiting to see this summer to longtime friend and partner William “Willie” Wilkerson. Just that quick, it’s all over according to breaking news reports on the couple this afternoon who were supposed to tie the knot in June or July.

City of Richmond Cold Weather Overflow Shelter is Open Tonight

Richmond, VA – The city’s Cold Weather Overflow Shelter will open tonight January 20, and Saturday, January 21, Zion Baptist Church, 14 West Duval Street. The shelter opens at 7 p.m. tonight and will close tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Food will not be provided and pets are not allowed. The shelter will not open on Sunday, January 22.

Residents in need of overnight shelter are asked to report to Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake by 5 p.m. each day for a comprehensive intake and referral to the appropriate shelter. Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake is located at the Freedom House Conrad Center, 1400 Oliver Hill Way, next to Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and Richmond City Jail. A referral to the Cold Weather Overflow Shelter will be provided to individuals who are not eligible for an existing shelter or if all available beds have been filled.

The Freedom House Conrad Center will continue to serve as a Day Warming Shelter through March 31, 2012. The Conrad Center is located at 1400 Oliver Hill Way. Operating hours are from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and clients will be provided breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information, call Executive Director Mleba Gibbs at (804) 233-4064 ext. 205.

The city’s Department of Social Services (DSS) will accept Crisis Assistance applications now through March 15, 2012 at 900 East Marshall Street, Monday through Friday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can also call the Fuel Line at (804) 646-7046. DSS also provides emergency assistance with gas and electric disconnection notices for residents who qualify.

Elderly or disabled residents can also contact Senior Connections for assistance at (804) 343-3000, Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

President Obama visits his Hometown Chicago, 4th Quarter Fundraising at $68 Million

President Barack Obama visited his hometown of Chicago to rally supporters for his re-election. He visited two of three fundraisers held Wednesday night. There were two big ticket events held at private homes. Obama attended an intimate fundraiser with attendance of 60 people. Couples paid $35,000 to mix and mingle with the president.

He later, visited a fundraiser with prices starting at $7,500 per person for 100 invited guests.

The Obama campaign contends that top fundraisers are important, but just as important are the website contributions of $50 or less, totaling 81%. And, contributions of $250 or less, totaling 98%.

Here is the latest on the Obama Victory Fund, together the Democratic National Committee and the Obama campaign has raised $156 million through September 2011. The Federal Election Commission just released the Obama campaign fourth quarter fundraising efforts at $68 million.

The FLOTUS, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Richmond Visit

First Lady Michelle Obama announced a major commitment by the country’s top medical colleges and universities to create a new generation of doctors, medical schools, and research facilities to ensure that veterans, service men and women receive the medical care that they deserve.

Mrs. Obama will be joined by numerous leaders from academic medicine who are committing to pursue groundbreaking research in the areas of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). They will also unite with the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. This union will enhance education and share research, information, and the best practices with each other, in order to, better serve veterans and their families.

First Lady Michelle Obama delivered remarks at Virginia Commonwealth University on Wednesday. VCU is a national leader in TBI research and a strong partner with the local VA hospital.

She attended a luncheon at the downtown Richmond Marriot in support of President Barack Obama’s re-election efforts, with ticket prices ranging from $500 to $10,000 for a VIP reception and photo. Mrs. Obama’s speech which discussed healthcare reform among other things, drew applause several times.

Mrs. Obama concluded her schedule with an evening fundraiser in Charlottesville.

UPDATE: 3 Year Old Boy Has Been Shot in Richmond’s Eastend, Father and Uncle in Custody

UPDATE! The Richmond Police Department has arrested two people in connection with the shooting of a three-year old boy Friday.

Antwoine Mealey, 21, of the 1500 block of North 20th Street, the father of the victim, was arrested and charged with felony child neglect resulting in injury.

Tyrell Mealey, 19, of the 1500 block of the North 20th Street, the uncle of the victim, was arrested outside the residence where the incident occurred and has been charged with obstruction of justice.

Anyone who has any information on this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens may also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.

A three year old boy was shot inside his home in the 1500 block of North 20th Street on Richmond’s eastend. The shooting occured at 3:15 p.m. today. The boy was taken to VCU Medical Center in a private vehicle by an adult in the home. Once the child arrived to the hospital the medical team noticed that he had been shot and contacted police.

Police and Detectives were called to the home on North 20th Street where the child lives. Police have one person of interest in custody. And, the vehicle that transported the child to the hospital has been impounded.

“Police are sure the child was shot inside the home but must determine if it was an accident”, said James Merchante, Public Affairs Unit, Richmond Police Department.

The boy remains in critical but stable condition following surgery.
