The View’s co-host and famed comedian/actress Sherri Sheperd is about to take on the big screen once again. Listen as the superstar personality talks live on the Tom Joyner Morning Show about her new role as a hooker in the movie “One For The Money.” Set to hit theaters this weekend on January 27th, the film also stars Shepherd alongside Katherine Heigl and Ryan Michelle Bathe.

In the interview, Shepherd also gets candid about how she prepared for the role with her husband as a streetwalker.  (Isn’t that a stretch for the newlyweds?)

In a recent interview with The Root, the bestselling author, MC and social activist sits down to talk about her career, her writing and tell why she is more than an “urban” author.

“I’m not in sync with this street-lit genre,” she told The Root. “I think that when European authors or Euro-American authors write about urban, suburban or rural areas, it’s just called literature. So I call my work literature, and anyone who reads my books knows that it’s literature.”

For the past year, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to carry the banner of the NAACP across this nation as an exemplar of the next generation of necessary leaders. This weekend, we gathered in Hollywood, FL for the 7^th Annual NAACP Leadership Summit. As civic, community and business representatives, we were there to evaluate and have critical discourse about our continuing role in the pursuit of civil rights and social justice. This vital group of individuals between 30 -50 years of age that assembled, were those who are positioned to  provide leadership, for such organizations as the NAACP, their places of employment, their community,  and indeed the nation.

At this year’s summit, we sought to engage in conversations that will address such issues as access to adequate healthcare, employment, education, economic development and political empowerment. At the same time, opportunities were provided for participants to interact and continue to strengthen their networks and leadership skills, as we share in the common goals of achieving equity and justice for all citizens. It is our hope that our participants depart this Leadership 500 Summit, enlightened and inspired to join the NAACP in our journey to affirm America’s promise and ultimately, assume a position of leadership.

Neither Kobe nor Joakim knew a single thing about the person they called a “faggot” and their comments were meant as insults not as a way to bash homosexuals per say.

On the basketball court, masculinity is valued. if you are tough, strong, aggressive you are “the man.” If you play timid, passive and weak you are called a “bitch,” a “pussy” a “bitch-ass n***” or a “faggot.”

For many in the world, being gay is the opposite of being masculine. So to call someone gay or a faggot is an insult to their masculinity. In hoops where trash talk and insults are common, and masculinity is valued, insults degrading opponents;, referees’ and fans’ masculinity is common.

If one were to put mics on everyone who played basketball from pee wee leagues to high school, to pick up games to 40 and over games, you would hear the word “faggot” as many times in any game as you would hear in an NBA game. The word is hurled between friends on football fields, playgrounds classrooms and workplaces.

Kobe and Joakim are not guilty of the same homophobia as Tim Hardaway who I said “I Hate Gays” or preachers who say that homosexuality is evil. They are using a word as an insult that has been part of American culture since before they were born, a culture that derides anything gay as “soft” and determines that calling someone gay is a good way to insult them.

Maybe if more NBA players would come out of the closet, basketball players would not connect being gay with being soft or feminine. While using “faggot” is wrong, it seems as young Black NBA players are being scapegoated for an American problem.
