The Washington Redskins open training camp today in Northern Virginia with high expectations for the upcoming NFL season. The Mike Shanahan era begins today, and the fans are expecting immediate results with veteran QB Donovan McNabb taking over, the first major decision by new GM Bruce Allen. Good call? Time will tell, but many believe McNabb’s best days are behind him. After finishing dead last in the NFC East, there’s nowhere to go but up for these Redskins. Drama unfolding with DT Albert Haynesworth, who despite earning over $21 million last season, is very unhappy with the team’s direction, and has been demoted to second string. Pictured above is what happens to innocent Dallas fans at Fed Ex Field, hopefully I wont be attacked this season. Arrest that Indian!!!!!!!

Move over Venus Flytrap, Pete Rose, Ickey Woods and any other would-be hero of Cincinnati. There’s a new Sheriff in town. And his name is T. O. Terrell Owens officially joined the Bengals after spending much of the offseason trying to convince NFL GM’s he could be trusted. Cincinnatti fans are certainly accustomed to controversial sports figures and the move gives the Bengals a potententially lethal passing game with T O & Chad Ocho-Cinco catching TDs from QB Carson Palmer. Owens’ first move as a Bengal? He “purchased” the No. 81 jersey from fellow wideout Antonio Bryant, who like T. O., was a cast off from the Dallas Cowboys.

Ray, Goodman, & Brown set the R & B music world on fire in the 70’s & 80’s with some the most memorable love songs of all time. Richmond, Virginia was indeed a main stop on any RGB concert tours as their loyal fans would show up at the Coliseum, The Landmark, or any venue this threesome would appear. Having hosted several of their shows, this week’s passing of Al Goodman (pictured left), leader of the group since their days as The Moments, reminded me of their polished and powerful performances. Harry Ray, the smooth tenor voice passed in 1992, leaving Billy Brown (pictured next to me) as the sole survivor of the original Moments. Here’s a great moment in Richmond at the KISS studios with me & the guys.

‘Clef says he’s filled out the proper paperwork in case he decides to go through with it, but he says he’s still thinking it over.

Ahh, the NFL Pre-season. A time for fans to renew their hopes for their favorite team’s upcoming season. The New Orleans Saints will attempt to defend their first ever Super Bowl title, while the Dallas Cowboys have loaded up new weapons to try and unseat them. QB Tony Romo already had an explosive offense, and now adds rookie speedster Dez Bryant to the mix, and that should cause concern for opposing NFL defenses. In Washington, while the Redskins don’t figure to be in the Super Bowl hunt, the biggest fear isn’t Donovan McNabb failing, it’s Jason Campbell succeeding in Oakland. Campbell had more coaches than TDs during his stay in DC, or so it seems, and his play with the Raiders this season will give some insight into whether the Skins gave up youth & talent for an old QB who’s seen his best days.

The Central Virginia sports community lost one it’s most passionate and dedicated broadcasters on Thursday when Terry Sissisky passed away at age 58. It is more of a personal loss for me because Terry was a mentor to me when I also began doing sports-radio. He spent tireless hours in his double-duty as the voice of both the VCU Rams and the Petersburg Crimson Wave. He loved PHS, his alma mater, and he loved those kids. He was the son of the late Congressman Norman L. Sissisky, and leaves his wife Sandra and his daughter Samantha to cherish his memory. Thank you “T – Man” for showing me what class and professionalism on the air was all about, and you will surely be missed in this community.

The University of Southern California has practically erased the memory of former football star Reggie Bush & ex-Trojan Basketball standout O. J. Mayo, taking down all memorabilia of the two now-pro athletes. Bush & Mayo both received lavish gifts while at USC, causing the Trojans to be cited by the NCAA for lack of institutional control within it’s athletic department, forcing the loss of a national championship. USC also turned in the Heisman Trophy awarded to Bush in 2005, completely disassociating themselves with the current New Orleans Saint. Mayo is currently playing in the NBA.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack sincerely apologized to Shirley Sherrod for his own rush to judgement after viewing the edited footage of her heartfelt speech to a group of young people at a recent NAACP banquet. Vilsack admitted that the decision to dismiss Sherrod was his and his alone. Vilsack not only offered his apology and a new position in the department working closer with the civil rights area, but the White House also apologized to Sherrod as well for the hasty firing. While media outlets have attempted to lay the blame at the feet of President Obama, Vilsack also cleared the record by saying he never contacted the White House and that he acted alone in requesting Sherrod’s resignation. She has accepted both apologies but it remains unclear whether she will accept the position.

Was an Obama Administration official who hastily forced the resignation of a Black USDA Director rushing to judgement? Tom Vilsack, the USDA Secretary requested the resignation of Shirley Sherrod yesterday for her remarks in a speech to the NAACP recently. Those remarks, in reference to a white farmer Ms. Sherrod once helped some 24 years ago, were a snippet of an even bigger story in which her message was not one of racism, but of a moment that she realized poverty saw no color. Vilsack is promoting a zero tolerance for discrimination within the USDA, and despite the fact that Ms.Sherrod was not a USDA employee 24 years ago, he moved rather quickly in removing her. One has to wonder if Vilsack even bothered to view the entire tape. The NAACP issued a statement today saying they were “duped” by an edited excerpt of the speech which aired on Fox News, and asked the USDA to reconsider her resignation. Even the white family she allegedly discriminated against has come forward in her defense saying that Sherrod actually saved their farm,
