Crooner Charlie Wilson will be performing at the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.  It pits Tennessee State vs. Jackson State in the annual football classic, which has been going on for the past 25 years.

“I just want to know which claw will deliver the fatal blow,” the former HBCU band drum major says of the hotly contested battle of two teams who share the moniker “Tigers.”  (Tennessee State is the odds-on favorite, given their position at the top of the HBCU football food chain.) As far as which team will win the Battle of the Bands, well, that’s a situation that requires some true skills, Wilson says.

“Both claws stick out really well and I don’t know who’s claws are the sharpest,” Wilson jokes. “The steps got to be crisp!”

Wilson has become known as the competition killer, with shows that range from 75 to 2 and a half hours of non-stop showmanship.

The Tom Joyner Morning Show references the takedown this year that had Lionel Richie follow Charlie Wilson at the Essence Fest – maybe not the best career move for Richie.

“I’m there as long as the people want me. I’m not going to short anyone. A Charlie Wilson party doesn’t stop,” Wilson says.

The career comeback of the former Gap Gand singer hasn’t stopped either. Get ready for another release from the affectionately named Uncle Charlie.

“I’m working on it right now. We’re having a ball and it’s going to be great. Right now, I’m in the studio with Jimmy Jam and Terry [Lewis].”

As for ‘nephews’ like Snoop Dogg and others that he’s collaborated with in the past, Wilson says he’s happy to have them aboard if the schedules can coordinate.

“I’ve reached out to my famous nephews but everybody is really, really busy and they want to really, really, really, help but I’ve got to keep going.”
