Several Virginia lawmakers in the Senate and House of Delegates support year-round schools. The lawmakers will unveil their support today during a press conference at the State Capitol. Year-round schooling according to the JLARC Review has been demonstrated to improve student performance.

Senator A. Donald McEachin (D-Henrico) joined Miss Community Clovia on the Tom Joyner Morning Show to discuss the unveiling of support for year-round schools in Virginia. Year-round schooling is suggested for “students from economically deprived backgrounds” and not all school systems, said Senator McEachin.  Students would attend school for 180-days with a shorten vacation. The legislators will be joined by Petersburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph Melvin, City of Lynchburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand and LeVerne Marshall, Principal of William Marvin Bass Elementary School, a year-round school in Lynchburg and Kelly Harris-Braxton, Executive Director of the Virginia First Cities Coalition. Also invited are Henrico County School Board member Lamont Bagby, Supervisor Tyrone Nelson of Henico County and Henrico schools Superintendent Patrick Kinlaw.

Why: The legislators will discuss budget amendments to fund year-round schooling programs in the Commonwealth. Legislators worked together to introduce budget amendments to allow more schools to apply for grants to support year round schooling. Year-round schooling has been demonstrated to improve student performance, especially in schools with high percentages of at-risk students.
