The 2013 – 2014 College Basketball season is up and running with the VCU Rams off to a flying start following wins over Illinois State and 25th-ranked UVA.  VCU, with heavy expectations this season, is now 3 – 0 following a 92 – 71 win over Winthrop University at the Siegal Center on Saturday.   The Rams will tackle the Seminoles of Florida State later in the week.  Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are 2 – 1 and showed they belonged among the nation’s top teams in their effort against VCU.  Virginia bounced back on Saturday at home against Davidson with a 70 – 57 win, the third of eight consecutive home games for the Wahoos.   Next up, the Naval Academy on Tuesday night in Charlottesville.

The University of Richmond now 2 – 1 after Saturday’s loss at home against Big 10 opponent Minnesota.  The Spiders were in it all the way before the Gophers ran away late in the game, which was to be a slight tune-up for next weekend’s tall task against 12th-ranked North Carolina.  Before the Tar Heels, Richmond will play on Tuesday night at home against A-10 foe Hofstra University in the Robins Center.  In the MEAC, Hampton rolled out of the gate with two straight wins to open the season, and on Sunday the University of Delaware will visit the Pirate-Dome.  Across the bay at Norfolk State, the Spartans are now 2 – 1 after a home win over the Panthers of Virginia Union on Friday night at Joe Echols Arena.

Speaking of the CIAA, the Trojans of Virginia State played Saturday in the Philadelphia area at Cheyney State University.  VSU opened the season in a 2-day West Virginia tournament, finishing 1 – 1 on the road trip.  The Trojans also get the CIAA opening win at Cheney 71 – 65 to improve to 2 – 1.  VSU will entertain Barton in their home opener this Friday night in Daniel Gym.  V-A’s other ACC member Virginia Tech came into the season with high hopes, then lost their home opener to SC – Upstate?   The Hokies have somewhat righted the ship since with victories over West Virginia and Western Carolina.  Tech will entertain long time rival VMI tonight at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.
