Mitch Malone’s NFL Weekly Blog: Boyz Find Going Hard In “Big Easy”

Week 10 of the 2013 NFL season got underway last Thursday in Minneapolis with the 1 – 7 Minnesota Vikings taking advantage of the short week and put a damper on the Washington Redskins “run” to the Playoffs.   The Redskins arrived with a sense of urgency and they were operating under the belief that the San Diego game was the launching point for an incredible turnaround.  The Vikings were certainly not going to lie down as Minnesota ran away with a 34 – 27 victory.  Washington is in now 3 – 6 and in a tie for third place with the Giants behind Dallas and Philadelphia in the NFC East, and ironically, Philly is the next opponent.

The front-running Cowboys were blown out 49 – 17 at New Orleans in a game where the Boyz needed to make a huge statement.  That didn’t happen, turns out it was Drew Brees and the Saints who made the statement that the Dallas defense stinks.  The loss, coupled with an injury to their star LB Sean Lee, puts the Cowboys in a tie for first place with the Eagles.  There is hope in the schedule as the Cowboys have the NFC East opponents, Oakland, and the Chicago Bears coming up, all very winnable games.  But can Dallas overcome all of the injuries and the horrible defense?  Remains to be seen.

Speaking of the Eagles, Philly put on an offensive show last week as QB Nick Foles tied an NFL record with 7 TD passes, and the Birds flew into Green Bay Sunday where there was no Aaron Rodgers, so Philly pounced right on the Pack and never looked back.   Don’t look now, but the Jacksonville Jaguars have finally won a game, and the Tennessee Titans were the Jags first victim of 2013.  Only Tampa Bay remains winless.   Defending champ Baltimore remains relevant in the AFC North by knocking off an Francisco, the Niners were on a roll until they ran into the Carolina defense, which shut Frisco down as the Panthers are becoming a force in the NFC.

In New York, the  Giants may not be in playoff contention, but this is not a team to take lightly as they defeated the Oakland Raiders for their 3rd win.  The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been going south lately, pulled out the win at home against Buffalo.  Richmond’s Russell Wilson and his Seattle Seahawks had their way in Atlanta, crushing the Falcons, while the St. Louis Rams looked invincible in their blowout of the Indianapolis Colts.  The Detroit Lions continue to roll after defeating the Chicago Bears following another big game from Calvin Johnson..
