The CIAA Championship Game is Saturday, November 16th, and if the Trojans of Virginia State University can keep the momentum going into next Saturday’s road game at Chowan University, they could accomplish the first of the team’s 2013 goals, to win the CIAA North Division title, which means a berth in the CIAA Championship Game and an opportunity to move to the next level: The NCAA playoffs.  Certainly Trojan Head Coach Latrell Scott has been preaching “one game at a time”, and it’s working, as VSU is undefeated in league play, and 7 – 1 overall after Saturday’s 34 – 14 win over Lincoln University in Pennsylvania,  Virginia State is also gaining national recognition as the Trojans are starting to show up in the D-2 polls.

Meanwhile, the Panthers of Virginia Union University took their three-game win streak to Bowie State where the Bulldogs were still upset about letting the VSU game get away, and that’s never a pleasant trip for the opponent.  Bowie ran wild in a 34 – 7 victory, a devastating loss for Union, which trailed front-running Virginia State by one game and could have forced a showdown in their season ending game on November 9th.  The Trojans now control their own destiny, but a loss at Chowan next week would put Virginia Union right back in the mix.  The Panthers are now 3 – 5, and two games behind VSU with Elizabeth City visiting Hovey Field this weekend.

The University of Richmond hosted the CAA’s top team in the Tigers of Towson on Saturday, and although the Spiders tried everything they could to lure Towson into their web, it wasn’t meant to be as the Tigers get out of the West End with a 48 – 32 victory.  The loss was Richmond’s 4th straight and 6th in their last seven games.  The Spiders welcome Albany to the Capital City next weekend.  In the MEAC, Hampton University has turned it around after beginning the season with five consecutive losses.  The Pirates romped over Delaware State Saturday 30 – 7 to win their third straight game and are now 3 – 1 in MEAC play with a test this weekend at Morgan State.

At Norfolk State, the Spartans were hoping to build some momentum with three straight home games, but things have not gone well as arch-rival Hampton rolled into Norfolk last week and beat the Spartans, then this weekend, Old Dominion drove across town to pick up a 27 – 24 victory, dropping NSU to 2 – 6 on the season.  The ACC landscape is changing now that Duke is officially a player in football based on their back to back victory tour through the State of Virginia.  The Dookies roughed-up UVA last weekend, then went into Blacksburg and upset the 14th-ranked Hokies 13 – 10.  Meanwhile, Virginia falls again, Georgia Tech wins 35 – 25 in Charlottesville.
