The Virginia Board of Elections has decided to purge more than 38,000 names from its voter rolls just weeks before Election Day! Despite the outrage and concern of local election administrators that many of those voters are still eligible to vote.
The purge comes months after the board said it would use several databases to find voters who were now ineligible to vote because they had been convicted of a felony or had moved out of state. After an initial list was sent of voters who would be purged to local election administrators, those administrators found hundreds of voters who shouldn’t be removed.
At the beginning of October this year, the state Democratic Party filed paperwork seeking an injunction to halt the purge but the Board of Elections said it had already nixed 38,870 names from voter rolls after county registrars reviewed the initial lists.
According to the Washington Times:
“Local election officials in counties throughout the state have identified countless errors in the SBE’s list of 57,000,” the lawsuit says. It further argues that the purge is being enforced by Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, “notwithstanding the direct conflict of interest he has as the Republican gubernatorial candidate.”
