Mitch Malone’s 804 College Football Blog: Trojans Romp, Spiders Win!

For the Virginia State University Trojans, there were three things accomplished on Saturday.  One, the Trojans won their home opener and the first game at Rogers Stadium for new State coach Latrell Scott.  Secondly, VSU wanted to atone for last week’s loss to Benedict in New York, and third but not least, Kentucky State came in ranked and respected, so the 41-0 rout sends a message to all, especially the CIAA, that there is a “new era” beginning on the Hill.  State is now 2 – 1 with the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith visiting Ettrick this weekend.

For the Trojans arch-rival, Virginia Union, another tough day at Hovey Field, where the Panthers have lost two weeks in a row, the latest, a 21 – 7 loss to Fayetteville State on Saturday.  Union falls to 0 – 3, and it doesn’t get any easier as three-time defending CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State comes to Richmond this Saturday.  The Rams certainly won’t take Union lightly but there is growing anticipation of the Winston-Salem/N C Central game is a preview of the CIAA Championship.  We wish the Panthers luck in trying to turn their season around.

In the MEAC, not a pleasant year so far for the two V-A MEAC representatives Norfolk State and Hampton University.  Both are winless going into Game 4 of their season schedule as the Spartans fell at Charleston Southern and Hampton lost at Coastal Carolina.  Meanwhile, the Spiders of Richmond fought their way to a big win over Liberty University, giving the fans a treat on the West End.
