The 2013 College Football season got underway lover the Labor Day weekend with the University of Richmond posting a 34 – 0 shut-out of VMI.  While the Spiders expect to make some noise in the FCS this year, they will step up the competition a notch this weekend with   a date in Raleigh at North Carolina State.  In Charlottesville, UVA won a dramatic 19 – 16 victory over Brigham Young.  and now the Cavaliers jump into the national fire with No. 3 Oregon coming to V-A this weekend.  For the Hokies of Virginia Tech, no one expected a win ove No. 1 Alabama and a 35 – 10 loss doesn’t tell the real story of how competitive the Tech was against the Crimson Tide.

In the CIAA, the defending champion Rams of Winston-Salem State will get the 2013 campaign going on Thursday night with a CBS game at UNC-Pembroke.  The rest of the league will begin play this weekend, including the Trojans of Virginia State, who will open at Fayetteville State on Saturday in a big test for new Head Coach Latrell Scott, the former Richmond coach who succeeds Morgan Faison.  Meanwhile, Virginia Union will also begin the new season away from Hovey Field.  The Panthers will visit Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach.

In the MEAC, both Hampton University and Norfolk State lost their openers last weekend with the Pirates falling at Western Illinois, and the Spartans lost their home opener against the University of Maine.  Hampton’s task doesn’t get any easier this weekend as they travel to Williamsburg to take on the Tribe of William & Mary, while Norfolk State has a date at Rutgers University in a CBS National game.
