Pending Board of Visitors’ approval, Virginia State University has named Lonnie Blow, Jr. as the school’s 20th men’s basketball coach. Blow comes to VSU from St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC, where he served in the same capacity.

In three years as head coach at St. Augustine’s, Blow compiled a 63-27 record. His 2009-10 team won the CIAA championship. That year, he was named CIAA Coach of the Year and Division II National Coach of the Year by two organizations. The 2009-10 CIAA Championship team also received the conference honor for the highest team Grade Point Average. Last year, Blow’s team earned a 92 percent graduation rate.

During the 2010-11 season, Blow was an assistant coach at Old Dominion University. That year, the ODU won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and led the nation in rebounding.

“Lonnie will be a great leader for the Virginia State University men’s basketball program,” said Athletic Director Peggy Davis. “His commitment to excellence on the court and in the classroom embodies the ideals we set for our student-athletes. The search committee was unanimous in its decision that Lonnie Blow, Jr. is the right person to lead our men’s basketball team to a championship level.”
