The City of Petersburg came out on Saturday evening to welcome the Rev. Jeremiah Wright to this community at a reception held at Traditionz Restaurant. Rev. Wright was in town as a guest speaker of the city’s Greater Faith AME Zion Church on Sunday, and made it perfectly clear that he was quite comfortable in his surroundings being a graduate of Virginia Union University and being quite familiar with Petersburg and arch-rival Virginia State.
Rev. Wright is of course, the pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, and was thrust into the national news spotlight in 2008 when one of his church members was on his way to becoming President of the United States. The reception was hosted by the church, and I was proud to introduce the guest of honor to an audience that included Delegate Roslyn Dance, Petersburg Mayor Brian Moore, Sheriff Vanessa Crawford, Commonwealth’s Attorney Cassandra Burns-Connover, and a host of other city council and school board officials.
