According to news reports, police arrested the suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, in Watertown. The arrest came after about  a two-hour standoff with police. Tsarnaev was believed to be holed up in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown neighborhood. The standoff began minutes after authorities held a press conference telling the people of Boston and Watertown that they could resume normal activity, but to maintain vigilance. Tsarnaev’s older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed following a gun battle with police on Thursday night.

Tsarnaev’s apprehension caps a daylong lockdown that impacted the entire city of Boston, shutting down mass transportation and closing businesses. Residents were asked to stay indoors and not to allow anyone into their homes unless they were law enforcement officers. The lockdown began after a gun battle Thursday night. The two brothers lead police on a chase through a Watertown neighborhood after reportedly carjacking one man and killing an MIT police officer who sat in his car. Governor Deval Patrick said at least 200 rounds of ammunitions and explosives were fired during the gun battle.

Tsarnaev’s older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died as a result of the gun battle.
