Congratulations to former Prince George HS star Jackie Bradley, Jr, wh won the starting outfielder job for the Boston Red Sox, who opened the regular season at Yankee Stadium this week.  The former Royal scored twice in Boston’s 8 – 2 victory over New York.  Bradley was drafted in 2012 out of the University of South Carolina and quickly climbed up the ladder from Double-A baseball after hitting 400-plus during this year’s spring training.  Good luck Jackie!

Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers signed Goochland native and former ODU star Justin Verlander to the richest contract for a pitcher in baseball history, valued at some $180 million.  The free agent from Manakkin has won the American League Most Valuable Player award and a coveted Cy Young award as well.   The Tigers drafted Verlander in 2006 out of Old Dominion University.  He started on opening night in Minnesota as the Tigers won 4 – 2 with Justin striking out 7 to open the Major League Baseball season fpr 2013.
