On Tuesday, the House of Delegates Committee confirmed an openly gay judge to a full six-year term on the Richmond General District Court. Tracy Thorne-Begland, a former Naval Flight Officer and prosecutor was rejected last session for a judgeship in the 13th General District Court, but was appointed to the vacancy anyway on an interim basis by the Richmond Circuit Court. Last year, House members specifically voted down the deputy commonwealth attorney because of his sexual orientation. The House said ‘yes’ this year and voted 66 in favor, 28 against, 1 absention and 5 delegates did not for the confirmation.

Tracy Thorne-Begland will face a Senate vote but his strongest challenge was the House of Delegates.
