The Trojans of Virginia State University made it three straight wins before a big Homecoming crowd at Roger’s Stadium last Saturday with a 26 – 3 victory over the Lions of Lincoln University. VSU is now 3 – 2 in the CIAA Northern Division, tied with Chowan University, and one game behind division leader Elizabeth City. The Trojans have already beaten the Vikings, and hope for help from elsewhere to perhaps contend for a slot in the CIAA Championship game.

Meanwhile, In Richmond, The Panthers of Virginia Union University defeated the Bulldogs of Bowie State 37 – 13 at Hovey Field to even their record at 4 – 4 on the season, and rebound from last week’s road loss at Chowan. The Panthers could assist themselves and Virginia State with a road win this Saturday at Elizabeth City. The Trojans will host Chowan in that battle for second place in the CIAA North.

In the MEAC this past weekend, the thrill of victory and the ensuing joy afterward has already vanished for the Pirates of Hampton University, who pulled off a major upset of arch-rival Norfolk State in the “Battle of the Bay” two weeks ago. Hampton lost big at North Carolina Central on Saturday 37 – 20 in Durham, leaving the Pirates at 1 – 5 on the season. Hampton is under probation and ineligible for the MEAC title or any postseason play.

Norfolk State saw the wheels come off of their season earlier in the campaign with home losses to Howard and Delaware State, and this past Saturday, the Spartans literally crashed & burned in Daytona Beach as Bethune-Cookman blasted NSU 48 – 3. An unbelievable turn of events for a team that won the NEAC title in 2011 and were picked to win it all again in 2012. So much for that idea, Norfolk State is 0 – 5 in the MEAC with a date this weekend in Greensboro at North Carolina A & T.
