In the CIAA last weekend, the Panthers of Virginia Union University hosted the Blue Bears of Livingstone College in what was to be a tune-up for the big VUU Homecoming this weekend. Unfortunately, these Bears were not very cooperative and left Hovey Field on Saturday with a 27 – 21 victory over the Panthers. Union will now entertain Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Saturday to culminate the Homecoming festivities this weekend in the Capital City.

The Trojans of Virginia State University are finding little comfort at home in Roger’s Stadium after the Men of Troy dropped their second home game of the season to Shaw University 16 – 6. VSU has only one win this year, and will host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University next Saturday on the Hill. Defending champion Winston-Salem State continues to dominate the CIAA as the Rams moved to 5 – 0 following a 35 – 3 blow-out of Bowie State, and that game was played at Bowie.

In the MEAC, the Spartans of Norfolk State University, picked to repeat as MEAC champions, went into Orangeburg, SC to face the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University, and came away on the short end of a 14 – Zip shut-out. The loss drops NSU to 2 – 3 following a solid 2 – 0 start and the Spartans now have lost three straight and find themselves winless in the league and in eighth place this week in the MEAC standings. Norfolk State will entertain Delaware State this Saturday at Dick Price Stadium.

The Pirates of Hampton University continue to muddle through what has to be a miserable season for fans of HU who have been spoiled by the team’s overwhelming success under former coach Joe Taylor. Hampton is now 0 – 4 after a 38 – 26 loss at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona. The Pirates are under probation and are ineligible for post-season play or the MEAC title.
