Hundreds came out Sunday to the BET and Hip Hop Caucus Respect My Vote Town Hall Meeting.  The meeting, which was held at the Charlotte School of Law, provided an opportunity for the hip hop crowd to engage in dialogue around voter disenfranchisement and the importance of the youth vote. In addition, those who were unregistered were able to register and everyone took a pledge to vote in the upcoming election.

Panelists, which included Activist, Author and Speaker Kevin Powell, Singer Michael McCluney from PDiddy’s Making the Band group Day 26, Barbara Arnwine of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, Local Activist Carrie Cook, Attorney Geraldine Sumter, encouraged young voters to register, get to know the issues and vote on election day.

Kevin Powell urged young voters to realize their power, stating that in his opinion they were the most brilliant generation in the nation’s history. He went on to say that youth need to develop voting and activism as a culture, a part of their lifestyle.

Carrie Cook told attendees to make sure they were always ready. “If you stay ready you don’t have to get ready.”
