The two biggest media darlings of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London are without a doubt swimmer Michael Phelps, a Northern Virginia resident who is now holder of more Olympic medals than anyone in the history of the Games, and Gabby Douglas, star of the US Women’s Gymnastics Team.    Phelps has accumulated 21 overall medals in his three Olympic appearances, and while he has not announced it officially, there is wide speculation that this was his final Olympic appearance.

Gabrielle Douglas, a Virginia Beach resident, has taken the gymnastics world by storm after contributing to the USA Women’s Gymnastics team’s Gold medal-winning performance. Douglas was a virtual unknown among gymnastics circles, but has trained hard over the past few years to bring her talent to a world-class level. Douglas showed everyone that she has indeed arrived, and simply outclassed the competition.

Douglas made history by winning a Gold medal in the All – Around gymnastics competition, becoming the first American women’s gymnast to ever win a team Gold medal and an All-Around Gold Medal as well, and we here in the Old Dominion couldn’t be prouder of her accomplishments.    In fact, we say congratulations to all of the Virginians who were a part of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games!
