Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on this date July 18, 1918 in South Africa. Mandela was the first ever to be elected President in a fully representative democratic election 1994-1999. He was an anti-apartheid activist, leader and co-founder of Umkhonto We Sizwe. The group was affiliated with the African National Congress (ANC). Mandela was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges and sentenced to life in prison at Robben Island. Mandela served 27 years and was released on February 11, 1990.

Nelson Mandela worked tirelessly after his incarceration with his party in negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994. As President, his top priorities were bringing reconciliation to his country and putting in place policies that would combat poverty and inequality.
