Special prosecutor Angela Corey has charged George Zimmerman with second-degree murder in the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Speaking at a press conference in Jacksonville, Florida Wednesday, Corey said she based her charges on facts and not public pressure. It wasn’t a decision that her team took lightly.

Corey said she will fight the “Stand Your Ground” defense in the Zimmerman prosecution case. Zimmerman could face up to life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. Zimmerman turned himself in early Wednesday but was transported to the Seminole County Jail at 8:25 p.m.

George Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O”Mara said that Zimmerman was surprised that the state charged him. O’Mara said it suggest that Zimmerman did something unlawful. O’Mara will motion a judge for a bond hearing today. Zimmerman is in jail without a bond.

O’Mara said Zimmerman is troubled by the charges because he murdered Trayvon Martin in self-defense.

Special prosecutor Angela Corey said she met with Tracy Martin and Sybina Fulton  three weeks ago and opened the meeting with prayer. Corey said “our prosecution team promised those sweet parents we would get answers to all of their questions, no matter where our quest for the truth led us. And it is that search for justice this night.”
