On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, Rick Santorum officially announced that he will be suspending his nomination the GOP presidential race.

At a speech given in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Santorum states,”We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting . We will continue to fight for those voices for those Americans who stood up and gave us that air under our wings.”

Over the weekend, Rick Santorum’s 3-yr-old daughter, Bella was hospitalized. Bella suffers from chromosomal disorder called Trisomy 18. Bella is the youngest of Santorum’s seven children. Due to Bella’s current condition Santorum used  the weekend as a “time of thought and prayer”.

Santorum’s campaign advisor also states that the “financial state of the campaign” is another reason why the candidate is pulling out from the race.  Last month Santorum’s campaign reported they are 1 million dollars  in debt and would have been forced to use all the money in order to keep up with Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Mitt Romney had more money and more organization. He is closer to the delegate count than Santorum. It would been impossible for Santorum to collect all 1,144 delegates needed to secure the GOP presidential nomination. However, Santorum is holding on to his  400 delegates and where will he place them?

Mitt Romney responded to Rick Santorum leaving the GOP race: “This has been a good day for me. Senator Santorum has decided not to proceed with his campaign, and I had the chance to speak with him this morning. We exchanged our thoughts about going forward, and we both have a great deal of interest in seeing the country taken on a very different path. He has made an important contribution to the political process.”
