A new study is shedding light on the bad behavior of the rich. It appears, thanks to their many resources, rich people are more likely than the lower-class to be selfish, deceptive and socially disconnected. Rich people are more likely to cheat and lie, researchers reported Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, who studied the wealthy in test environments.

The experiments suggest at least some wealthier people “perceive greed as positive and beneficial,” probably as a result of education, personal independence and the resources they have to deal with potentially negative consequences, the authors wrote.

Although the study does mention of infidelity specifically, some “unethical behavior” exhibited by the wealthy includes: unrightfully stealing, lying in a negotiation, cheating at a game to boost their chances of winning cash, and endorsing unethical behavior at work (such as stealing cash, receiving bribes and overcharging customers). Researchers concluded that infidelity comes with these practices.
